Piglet Eating Pellets

An update on an old friend of ours named Mrs. Piglet:

I hope this does not make you sad 🙁

Many of you who visit HappyCavy are probably already aware that Piglet passed away on December 30, 2011 from a condition called bloat.  Bloat is an often common fatal condition in which a guinea pig’s colon shuts down and refuses to process any more of the pellets, hay, and water that is necessary for a piggie to stay healthy and strong.

Piglet underwent surgery for a liposarcoma tumor on her rump Nov 3, 2010 and was off to a speedy recovery. The bloat was not thought to be a a direct result of the surgery, and there is no known cause, as often times bloat cannot be traced to a definite reason.

After what seemed to be a happy day, on the night of Monday, December 27, Piglet stopped eating. She also was spending a lot of time in her pigloo just staring at the side and even refused her favorite lettuce treats.  After taking her three times to the vet and a whole lot of hand feeding and loving care, she was refusing all food on December 29 and passed away to the Rainbow Bridge the next day. It took her faster than anyone in the HappyCavy Family had expected.

The fuzzies and humans took time to grieve and remember the good times with Mrs. Piglet.  And we are now content to think that Piglet is in a happier place filled with all of her favorite things – tomatoes, her Pigloo, and a pile full of hay and maybe even a green pepper or two.

But with so many guinea pigs out there who need love, we had to find more guinea pig friends to pamper and spoil.

Introducing: Feebee and Buttercup the Guinea Pigs

This weekend HappyCavy will be welcome home two new guinea pigs: Phoebe and Buttercup!

They are from Washington State and they have a Human that really loves them and spoils them rotten.  But she has developed an allergy and is heartbroken that she must say “goodbye” to her beloved piggies for the sake of her own health.  Being a good cavy mama, she wanted to ensure a loving home for Phoebe and Buttercup.  We are excited to know that their mommy will never have to say goodbye since she can still “visit” with her babies on our webcams 😉

Phoebe (let’s call her Feebee!) and Buttercup will be joining the HappyCavy Family this Saturday, January 22. They will be “quarantined” for 2 weeks before their big “broadcast debut”.

Learn more about the guinea pig quarantine process by reading The Importance of Guinea Pig Quarantine.

PHOTO TIME!

Feebee is the adorable black cavy and Buttercup is the cutsey brown-white cavy.

The first photo was taken by their mommy in Washington on the first day they came home with her.  Look how tiny and cute!
