“When can I see Feebee and Buttercup on the webcams??”

This is by far the #1 question we have received since welcoming the new fuzzies.  We are excited that so many of you can’t wait to start watching our babies on the cavy cams!

The short answer to this question is: February 12th.

But the lonnng answer is as follows:

Feebee and Buttercup were adopted Saturday, January 22nd. They have been in quarantine since their arrival. They will remain in separate living quarters from Hammy and Bitsy for another week, until February 5th. Feebee and Buttercup came from a clean home with a caring mama; they are happy and healthy guinea pigs.

But a quarantine period is always necessary when you adopt a new piggie, regardless of past living conditions.  This is because cavies can begin to show signs of illness after 2 weeks, which is the minimum length of a quarantine period.  Stresses your guinea pig experiences like travel, new environments, new sounds, and new people during the adoption process can weaken their immune system.  And if their immune system is weakened, illnesses (like mites or lice) can flare up because their body’s health-defenses are not strong enough to keep symptoms suppressed.

The main purpose of a quarantine is to be able to detect any signs of illness (by observing behavior, eating patterns, etc.) in Feebee and Buttercup early on. It’s secondary purpose is to protect Hammy and Bitsy from contracting anything that the new guinea pigs *may* have.  It’s always easier to treat 2 guinea pigs for problems than a herd of 4!

On February 5th, the quarantine will be finished and Feebee and Buttercup will be introduced to Hammy and Bitsy and the Happy Cavy Palace.  February 5th officially begins their lives in the Happy Cavy Forever Home.

The webcams will be offline for the first week after Feebee and Buttercup’s introduction to the family cage. This will give them a chance to acclimate to their new environment and get to know their new friends without the distractions of being over-night celebrities. Oy, what a life! 🙂

We hope you can join us for the Saturday, Feb 12th broadcast!
