How to Bathe Your Guinea Pig

Bitsy after a guinea pig bath

Guinea pigs do need to be bathed sometimes, especially when you first bring your cavy home, as they can be quite messy!

However, bathing them can cause them quite a bit of stress, so you should NOT make a habit of giving your guinea pig a bath.

This video was made by Wee Companions Small Animal Adoption.

Guinea Pig Shampoo

We recommend using Gorgeous Guineas cavy-friendly shampoo for your guinea pig’s bath.

We use Gorgeous Guineas guinea pig shampoo products. We especially enjoy the Lemon Tea & Lavendar conditioning shampoo, but they are all really great products!

Common wisdom states about 12 weeks or older, and coincidentally so do a number of other reputable guinea pig websites 🙂 Even Gorgeous Guineas states, “Guineas under 12 weeks of age should not need to be bathed unless they have a skin problem.”

And only bathe your guinea pig if they get dirty or stinky, which in many cases doesn’t happen often for certain types of breeds. Hope that helps!

Nope, Gorgeous Guineas is our favorite. But The Humans have used just a drop or two of baby shampoo in the past…hated it, smelled bad! Now we demand the good stuff 😀

My boy Porky has been around the block with baths a million times so he’s good about them, just a little twitchy as he’s set into the water, I was them in about an inch or two of water with two drops per guinea. I use Gorgeous Guineas too! My young guy, Hershey HATES water, I feel so bad I give him very quick scrub downs, making sure to clean him, just not as thoroughly as Porkers, they both get cleaned same amount, just different time patterns, I’m guessing there really isn’t anything I can do about his fear, just try and see if he’ll grow out of it. If there’s anything that CAN be done, please send me a message. I feel like there’s something I’m doing wrong!
