Happy Guinea Pig Appreciation Day, friends!

July 16 is a special date set aside each year in the U.S. to celebrate what matters most (guinea pigs!) and reflect on the many ways that our fuzzy friends fill our lives with so much love.

To help you make today a special one, we put together a few ideas for how you can celebrate Guinea Pig Appreciation Day 2023.

🐹 Give the Gift of Play

Having fun doesn’t have to cost a lot (or anything for that matter). While guinea pigs are naturally shy creatures, that doesn’t mean they don’t like to play. Plus, play time encourages exercise which can promote happier, healthier guinea pigs. And as we always say, a house isn’t a home unless the guinea pigs are happy.

This year, give your guinea pig the gift of play with one of these ideas for free, do-it-yourself (DIY) guinea pig toys.

❤️ Support a Guinea Pig Rescue

Guinea pigs ask for so little, and it just makes sense to go the extra mile for the ones we love. Whether you have a special guinea pig in your life or you enjoy cavies from afar, consider how you might support a local guinea pig rescue in need (hint: not everything involves donating money!). By supporting a local rescue, you’ll help lonely guinea pigs find a forever home with that special someone to spoil them rotten.

📅 Give the Gift of Routine

Schedules are important for guinea pigs. As creatures of habit, cavies thrive on routine. They prefer a care schedule that runs on time each day, every day of the week, thankyouverymuch.

Are you cleaning your pigs’ cage regularly? Do you remember to weigh them, trim their nails, clean their ears and give them floor time? What about your older guinea pigs — are you providing the kind of care that a senior cavy may need?

To help you get scheduled, check out this guide on how to come up with the best guinea pig care routine.
