Outbreak: Guinea Pig Mites

The last several weeks has been a bit stressful for the HappyCavy Family.

The mites seemed to reach a strong-hold for a few days, putting both the cavies and Humans on edge. Guinea pig fur mites can be one of the most stress-inducing illness for guinea pigs, but they certainly can take an emotional toll on their Human care-takers as well. *sigh*

The fight against mites is a big game of sitting and waiting…for….the…Ivermectin…medication…to kick-in while each guinea pig can be heard next to a continuous sound of scitch, scitch, scitch. The HappyCavies itched, scratched, and bit nearly every surface of their beautiful home. It’s too much to take!

But GOOD NEWS!! F.i.n.a.l.l.y.!

Today was the last vet appointment for the sweet itchy guinea piggies. And good news soon followed: They are nearly fully recovered!

During the past few days, itching has decreased and their need to bite and chew everything in sight has resumed to normal levels. There was a huge relief for the entire family after the awesome HappyCavy Family Vet examined each cavy and smiled. It was a sign that this battle might soon be over.

Piglet’s dandruff is beginning to go away and all three guinea pigs are showing “dramatic signs of improvement”.

Go away stupid fur mite!

The cage will still need to be cleaned twice a week for another two weeks. But after that it is smooth sailing. The Humans are rather excited about this, because, since the mite outbreak, the piggies have been staying on just one level. Piglet is just dying to get her privacy on the second floor, which will be reinstalled soon enough.

Here’s to no more itchies and scratchies!! wHeEkK whEekK!!!

Awesome to read a good news! Yea, those mites could be very dangerous for piggies. Remember to maintain all precautions for this thing to never happen again 🙂
