Can Guinea Pigs Eat Radishes

Published 12/6/2012 | Updated 3/31/2024
Category: Guinea Pig Diet | HappyCavy

The discerning palate of the HappyCavies never ceases to amaze us. While the HappyCavy guinea pigs are not fond of the usual guinea pig favorites like fruits and other sweet vegetables, they love munching on tart and often times odorous veggie snacks.

But just a few weeks ago, The Humans discovered a new favorite treat that the entire Herd enjoys: green radish leaf.

While many guinea pigs might not too fond of the red radish “fruit”, most go crazy over the velvety green radish leaves the grow the “above ground” part of the radish vegetable.

Human #1 enjoys snacking on radishes throughout the week, and the guinea pigs now expect The Humans to come home with a bunch of radishes. After a thorough washing, the green leafy tops are cut off and separated into a small bowl and placed in the fridge. The small bunch of washed, chilled radish leaves makes for a delicious treat your cavy can enjoy all week…just a little at a time.

When feeding your guinea pigs radishes and radish leaf, remember to give in moderation as radishes are high in calcium, which can lead to the development of bladder stones and other health issues.

The HappyCavies have spoken: they give radish leaves four enthusiastic paws up!

Yes, the guinea pig can eat the actual red radish, but only in moderation due to the high calcium content that can lead to bladder stones. That means just one or two slices per month.
