About Mathilde the Guinea Pig

Updated: 3/3/2026

Mathilde passed away on February 24, 2026. She had been fighting a good fight against a stubborn inner ear infection, but, unfortunately, she couldn’t fight any longer.

She left this world surrounded by her humans, her cagemates Bernadette and Annie and her favorite guinea pig friend, Baby Roo.

Mathilde was a fluffy, cheerful lap pig with a warbling wheek and a love for long naps and soft fabrics. At eight months old, she’ll be terribly missed from the HappyCavy family.

We love you, little fuzz. Please look for us when the time comes.

More About Mathilde: Where I Live, What I Eat
My Friends: Baby Roo, Annie and Bernadette

Mathilde (originally named Soursop) the guinea pig was adopted by HappyCavy on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, from the Multnomah County Animal Services in Troutdale, Oregon, along with her sister Bernadette. Mathilde was just a baby at about six months old when she arrived to her forever home with us.

Mathilde and Bernadette were rescued from an owner who had too many pregnant sows and had asked the animal shelter for help. They were born shortly before the rescue, and they were the few surviving babies. We don’t know much else about Mathilde’s life before she joined HappyCavy. She arrived shy and timid and severely underweight, despite the best attempts of the rescue staff to get her weight to stabilize.

Mathilde is a Texel guinea pig, which means her coat grows long and curly. This requires weekly grooming sessions to keep her hair clean and comfortable. It may take a lot of work, but we think she looks fabulous.

Mathilde is shy and timid. She doesn’t often like to show herself, but as she acclimates to her new home, she’s becoming more comfortable. Recently, she’s started to stand straight up on her back legs to beg for treats (a trick she learned from her new big sister, Annie). She’s picky about how and when she’ll play, but she’ll always find time for a nap in a quiet corner of the cage.

We’re so happy to have Mathilde and Bernadette with us, and we cannot wait to get to know them better in the years to come.
